Method

  1. preheat oven to 180°c/160°c fan forced. grease and line a 20cm square cake pan.

  2. combine dates, water and baking soda, stand 30 minutes.

  3. beat butter and sugar until light and creamy, beat in eggs one at a time. fold in date mixture and sifted flour. spoon evenly into prepared pan.

  4. bake 50-60 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

  5. meanwhile, to make caramel sauce, blend custard powder with 1/4 cup (60ml) NESTLÉ CARNATION light & creamy evaporated milk in a saucepan; add remaining milk, extra brown sugar and golden syrup. stir over a low heat until custard boils and thickens.
